Inspiration for Point Ridge came from two sources; first the centuries old hillside towns of Italy and secondly recent resort-like housing developments such as Noosa Springs in Queensland Australia. Traditional Italian villages on a hill top or mountain flank appear to grow out of the landform using local materials that blend with the countryside.
Translating this to Albany, Point Ridge employs a combination of clay colours on plaster walls combined with terracotta roof tiles and cobblestone paving to give a homogenous organic appearance within the landscape.
At close proximity however the variation of colour tones and complexity of build forms, stepping in both plan and elevation provides a richness and individuality at a human scale. Each residence is designed to extend the living spaces to the exterior using terraces, decks, verandahs and pergolas to make the transition. Buildings are also grouped to create useful large communal spaces between that can be shared by all. As a consequence places for casual and spontaneous interaction that will create vital neighbourhoods will be assured.
